Not for quoted work in business hours. Send photos, get a fixed price, and that is the price. Fault-finding, where we cannot know the job until we are in it, is priced by time and we tell you the rate before we come. After-hours emergencies carry a call-out, quoted on the phone.
Fixed price wherever the job can be seen from photos, which is most of them. It means a quick job is a cheap job and you know the number before you book. Where the job is genuinely unknown, like tracing an intermittent trip, it is by the hour with the rate agreed first.
For the first visit, yes, or someone who can let us in and show us the board. For a job you have already approved, a key or a code is fine, and you get photos of the finished work and the test results before we leave.
For most jobs only the circuit we are working on, for the time it takes. A switchboard swap needs the whole house off for a couple of hours and we tell you the window in advance so the fridge and the work-from-home day are sorted.
Switch off and unplug everything on that circuit, reset the switch, then plug things back in one at a time until it trips. That finds a faulty appliance nine times out of ten. If it trips with nothing plugged in, or in the rain, it is wiring or an outside fitting, and that is a call to us.
Cloth and rubber-insulated wiring from before the 1960s is at the end of its life and often has no earth. It does not have to be replaced all at once. We check it, put the board on safety switches so a fault trips the switch before it can hurt anyone, and replace circuits as rooms get renovated.
