Step 1: Switch off the main switch
If the board is dry and safe to reach, turn the main switch off. That isolates everything in the house in one move.
Step 2: Unplug whatever was running
Pull the plug on anything in use when it happened. Do not touch scorched, hot or wet fittings, and keep kids and pets clear.
Step 3: Check it is your side of the meter
If the neighbours are dark too, it is an Energex outage. Check the outage map before you call anyone.
Step 4: Call us and we will talk you through it

Anything that is unsafe or leaving you without essential power. That includes burning smells, sparking or scorched outlets, a switchboard that keeps tripping or will not reset, exposed or damaged wiring, storm and water damage, and a total loss of power that is not the grid. If in doubt, call and we will talk you through it.
Response times vary with where you are and what is happening, but a typical after-hours callout in our area is around 60 minutes. When you call we give you a realistic time on the phone.
If you smell burning, see sparks, or see damaged or exposed wiring, switch off your main switch at the switchboard if it is safe to reach, then call us. If anything feels dangerous, stay clear and call us straight away and we will guide you.
Check whether your neighbours have power and whether it is a known outage with your network provider. If they have power and you do not, the fault is likely on your side of the meter and we can help. If you are not sure, call us and we will help you work it out before anyone comes out.

Once, with everything on that circuit unplugged. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the appliance that trips it. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, stop resetting it. The fault is in the wiring or an outside fitting, often water after rain, and it needs a licensed electrician.
A small spark when you switch off a heater or another high-load appliance at the power point is switching under load and is normal. Turn the appliance off at its own switch first and you will stop it. Sparks with nothing plugged in, scorch marks, a hot switch or a burning smell are not normal. Call us.
Do not touch the board or any wet fitting. If the main switch is dry and safe to reach, turn it off. Otherwise keep everyone clear and call us. We make it safe first, dry and test what can be saved, and tell you what needs replacing before we replace it.
Yes. Queensland tenancy rules allow emergency repairs to be arranged when the agent cannot be reached, and a fault that is unsafe counts. We give you an itemised invoice and photos of the fault so you can pass them to your property manager. If you can, try the agent's after-hours number first and note the time you called.
