The charger is the easy part. Charging from the right source is what makes it cheap. Pick how you want to run it.

Charge on sunshine you would otherwise export

What it needs

A solar-aware charger with a CT clamp on the mains, so it follows your export and pauses when a cloud comes over. Best when the car is home during the day.

Straight talk

Match the charger brand to your inverter where you can. If you already have a home battery, a plain charger set to a modest rate does nearly as well, because the battery soaks up the excess anyway.

What the install includes

EV charger installation in Brisbane: circuit, charger, paperwork, certificate

  • Electrician fitting a labelled EV charger RCBO and a CT clamp in a residential switchboard

A dedicated circuit and the board check

Its own RCBO, cable sized for the run and the current, and a look at whether the mains and board can take a 32 A continuous load. If they cannot, we say so before quoting.

  • Electrician mounting a wall-box EV charger on a brick garage wall

    Charger mounted, wired and commissioned

Yours or ours, Tesla, Zappi, Evnex, Ocular or another Type 2 unit. Mounted where the cable reaches the port, connected to your wifi, app set up and tested with your car.

  • Electrician showing a homeowner the charging app with her car plugged in

    Energex paperwork and the certificate

The Electrical Work Request lodged before we start on anything above 20 A, and a certificate of test at the end. That certificate is what the charger warranty asks for.

How an install runs

Photo to plugged in, usually half a day

  1. Step 01

    Two photos and a quote

Your switchboard with the door open, and where the car parks. From that we can quote most installs without a visit.

  2. Step 02

    Board and load check

We confirm the mains, the spare way and what else the house runs. If a board upgrade is needed we quote it alongside and do both in one visit.

  3. Step 03

    Energex lodged

Anything above 20 A needs an Electrical Work Request before the work starts. We lodge it, you do nothing.

  4. Step 04

    Cable, mount, commission

Dedicated cable run, charger mounted at the right height for the port, wifi and app connected, tested on your car.

  5. Step 05

    Certificate of test

Issued on completion. Keep it with the charger paperwork, the manufacturer wants it for warranty.

Common questions

EV charger questions, answered straight

Tell us the car, whether you have solar, and send a photo of the board. We will tell you what fits before anyone comes out.

A lower-output home charger starts from $1,200 and a three-phase charger from $1,800, both supplied and installed with GST included. Above that it depends on the cable run, single or three phase, whether the board has a spare way, and whether we supply the charger. A 15 A socket is the cheap end; a 7 kW wall charger on a straightforward run is the common middle; a three-phase unit with a long run or a board upgrade is the top end. Send a photo of the board and of where the car parks and you get one fixed written price.

For almost every household, yes. At 7.4 kW you add about 45 km of range an hour, so an eight-hour overnight charge adds around 350 km. Most people drive 30 to 60 km a day. Faster hardware buys convenience for the odd long day.

No. A 7 kW single-phase charger runs on the supply most Brisbane homes already have. Three-phase lets you fit an 11 kW or 22 kW unit, but most cars only accept 11 kW from a home charger anyway. If you already have three-phase we will use it; we do not recommend paying to add it just for a car.Source: Energex, charging your EV

Yes, with the cable that came with the car, at about 10 to 12 km of range an hour. It suits people who drive short distances and plug in every night. A dedicated 15 A socket is 50 per cent faster and cheap to add. Do not run it through an extension lead or a powerboard.

Sometimes. A 32 A charger is a continuous load, so it needs its own RCBO and a board and mains that can carry it. Most boards from the last 15 years take it. Ceramic fuse boards, boards with no spare way, or homes already running a pool and two aircons may need the board or the mains upgraded. We check from your photo and quote both together if so.

In Queensland, a charger rated at 20 A or under connects with no paperwork. Above 20 A, which includes every 7 kW wall charger, an Electrical Work Request has to be lodged with Energex before the install. We lodge it as part of the job. Three-phase homes can go to 22 kW under the same process.

Yes, with a solar-aware charger and a CT clamp on the mains. The charger watches what you are exporting and charges the car with it, pausing when a cloud comes over. It works best if the car is home during the day. If you already have a home battery, a plain charger set to a modest rate does nearly as well, because the battery absorbs the excess anyway.

One that matches your inverter if you want solar charging, otherwise any well-supported Type 2 unit. We install Tesla Wall Connector, myenergi Zappi, Evnex, Ocular and customer-supplied units. A Tesla Wall Connector charges non-Tesla cars too, though the smart solar features only work with Tesla gear.

Yes. Plenty of people buy the unit with the car or on special. Tell us the model and we size the circuit for it. It needs to be an Australian-certified unit with the RCM mark; some cheap imports are not, and we will say so before fitting anything.

A 32 A socket with a portable 7 kW charger gets you full speed for less money, and the charger moves house with you. A hardwired wall charger is tidier, holds its cable, and is what most owners end up wanting. Both need the same circuit and the same Energex paperwork, so the install cost is similar.

Most single-phase installs are done in half a day. Add a switchboard upgrade and it is a full day, done in one visit. Energex paperwork is lodged before we arrive, so there is no waiting on the day.

Yes. Every install comes with a certificate of test. Keep it with the charger paperwork, because most manufacturers ask for it on a warranty claim. The install itself is covered by our 12-month workmanship guarantee.
