Every existing home must comply by 1 January 2027. Nobody inspects, but from that date non-compliant alarms are a problem for insurance, for selling and for leasing.
1.Are they photoelectric?
Look for AS 3786-2014 on the body. A yellow radiation symbol means ionisation, which is not compliant.
2.Are they interconnected?
Press test on one. If they all sound, yes. If only that one sounds, no.
3.Is there one in every bedroom, the hallway, and on every storey?
Bedrooms and the hallway that connects them, plus at least one on any storey without bedrooms.
4.Are they all under ten years old?
The manufacture date is printed on the back. Ten years is the legal life.
5.Are they hardwired, or sealed ten-year battery?
Hardwired with backup, or a non-removable ten-year lithium battery. A 9V alarm that takes a battery you can swap is not compliant.

Smoke alarm questions, answered straight
Send a photo of one of your alarms and how many bedrooms you have, and we will tell you whether you are compliant before anyone comes out.
From $110 an alarm, supplied and installed with GST included. The alarm count is set by the law, one in every bedroom and hallway and on every storey, interconnected, so most homes need three to six. We confirm the count on the site check and give you one fixed written price before we start.
By 1 January 2027, every Queensland dwelling must have photoelectric smoke alarms that are interconnected with each other, installed in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. Homes that are sold or newly leased have had to meet this standard since 1 January 2022. Alarms must comply with AS 3786:2014, be less than 10 years old, and must not contain an ionisation sensor.Source: Queensland Fire Department smoke alarm legislation
If your existing alarms are hardwired 240V units, their replacements must also be hardwired. The legislation allows either hardwired alarms or alarms with a non-removable 10-year battery, as long as everything is photoelectric and interconnected. We'll look at what's in your home now and recommend the setup that gets you compliant without over-spending.
When one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the home sounds at the same time. That's the core of the QLD legislation: a fire in the kitchen wakes someone asleep behind a closed bedroom door at the other end of the house. Interconnection can be wired or wireless (RF) between compatible alarms.
At minimum: one in each bedroom, one in any hallway connecting bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling, and one on each storey without bedrooms. The exact count depends on your floor plan; we confirm placement on site against the legislation and quote the full fit-out before we start.
Photoelectric alarms detect smouldering, smoky fires significantly faster, which is how most fatal house fires start. Queensland legislation now requires photoelectric alarms and prohibits alarms containing an ionisation sensor. If your home still has ionisation alarms, they need to go as part of your compliance upgrade.
Your property must already meet the full interconnected photoelectric standard: it's been mandatory for homes sold or leased (including lease renewals) since 1 January 2022. We do full compliance fit-outs for owners, sellers, and landlords across Brisbane east, and test every alarm before sign-off.
Yes. Hardwired 240V smoke alarms must legally be installed by a licensed electrician in Queensland. ABS Electrical operates under Electrical Contractor Licence 1502980 with full public liability insurance.
Every smoke alarm installation is backed by a minimum 12-month workmanship guarantee, on top of the manufacturer's warranty on the alarms themselves. If anything we installed develops a fault inside that window, we come back and fix it at no cost to you.

Usually humidity, cooking smoke drifting down a hallway, or a cheap alarm that cannot cope with Brisbane summers. Dust on the sensor does it too. We fit photoelectric units chosen for our climate, keep them out of kitchens and bathrooms, and position them away from vents and fans. If a set keeps false-alarming, do not rip them down. The alarm that triggered flashes its light differently to the others, usually a fast red flash, and on most units pressing hush on that one silences the lot. Pressing hush on a different alarm does nothing, which is why people end up running around the house. We show you how it works on your units before we leave.
No. The law asks for bedrooms, hallways that connect bedrooms, and every storey. Kitchens and bathrooms are avoided because steam and cooking set alarms off, and people then take them down. If an agent tells you a kitchen alarm is required, ask them for the clause.
