Sound familiar?

Slow WiFi is usually a cabling problem

  • WiFi dies upstairs or at the back of the house

Queenslanders, brick walls and two storeys eat WiFi. One router in the front room cannot cover it.

Wired access point where the signal actually needs to be

  • Video calls drop in the home office

WiFi shares one radio with every phone and TV in the house. Calls lose the fight.

A Cat6 point at the desk, plugged straight in

  • The NBN box is in the wrong room

Installers put it where the old phone line came in, usually the far end of the house from where you use the internet.

Relocate the NBN connection or cable from it to a cabinet

  • No internet in the shed or granny flat

Twenty metres and a tin wall is too far for WiFi. Extenders halve your speed and drop out.

Cable in conduit to the outbuilding, or a point-to-point link

  • Everything slows down at 7pm

Too many devices on one router. The router is the bottleneck.

Switch in a cabinet, wired TVs and consoles, WiFi for the rest

  • Cameras and doorbells keep going offline

Security gear on WiFi is the first thing to drop when the signal is weak.

PoE cable runs so they are powered and connected on one lead

What we would install

One Cat6 point at the desk, and stop fighting the WiFi

  • Cat6 data point behind the desk
  • Second point for a printer or dock if wanted
  • Wired access point nearby if the rest of the floor is weak

Why

A cable takes your laptop off the shared WiFi radio completely. Calls stop dropping and uploads stop crawling.

Straight talk

If the office is within sight of the router, a decent mesh node can do. Past a couple of walls, cable wins every time.

What we install

Data cabling in Brisbane, from one data point to a whole network

  • Electrician terminating a Cat6 cable into a wall plate in a home office

    Cat6 data points

Wall plates where you actually sit: the desk, the TV, the study. Run through the roof or wall, terminated to the standard, tested and labelled.

  • Electrician mounting a ceiling WiFi access point in a hallway

    WiFi access points

Ceiling-mounted, fed by cable, powered over the same lead. One per level covers a Queenslander properly.

  • ABS electrician patching a neat home network cabinet with labelled leads

    Home network cabinets

A small wall cabinet in the garage or cupboard with a patch panel, switch and your NBN gear, cables dressed and labelled.

  • Recessed TV and data wall plates

    NBN relocation and tidy-ups

Move the NBN connection box to the right room, or cable from it to a cabinet so the modem can live somewhere sensible.

  • Electrician running Cat6 cable through a roof space by head torch

    Roof, outdoor and outbuilding runs

Cable through roof spaces, along eaves and in conduit to sheds, granny flats and cameras. Done tidily, done once.

  • Office data rack with patched network cabling

    Office and shop networks

Wall racks, patch panels, switches and business WiFi for fit-outs and upgrades. Labelled so any tech can follow it later.

How a networking job runs

From dead spots to tested points

  1. Step 01

    Walkthrough and WiFi check

We look at where the NBN comes in, where you use the internet, what is in the ceiling and walls, and where the WiFi actually drops.

  2. Step 02

A point plan and a fixed price

How many points, where the access points go, whether a cabinet makes sense. One written price, no per-metre surprises.

  3. Step 03

    Run, terminate, label

Cable through the roof or walls, wall plates fitted flush, every lead labelled at both ends, drivers and switches dressed into the cabinet.

  4. Step 04

Test every point, hand over the map

Each point is tested end to end before we leave, and you get a labelled plan of what goes where.

What sets the price of a networking job

Data cabling quotes swing wildly because the work is mostly access. Here is what actually moves ours. You get one fixed written price after the walkthrough.

  • Number of points and how far each cable has to run
  • Access: roof cavity and timber walls, or slab, brick and concrete
  • Whether you want a cabinet and patch panel, or a simple point-to-modem run
  • Active gear (switch, access points) supplied by us or already yours

Tested, labelled, guaranteed

Every point is tested end to end and labelled at both ends before we leave, and the install is covered by our 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Common questions

Networking questions, answered straight

Send a photo of your NBN box and a rough sketch of the house, and we will suggest a point plan before anyone comes out.

If the WiFi reaches every room at full speed and never drops, no. Most Brisbane homes are not like that. A wired point for the desk and the TV takes the heavy users off the WiFi, and a cabled access point on each level fixes the dead spots. WiFi is for phones. Cable is for anything that matters.

In Australia, in-wall and in-roof data cabling has to be installed by a registered cabler from end to end, termination included. It is an odd rule but it is the rule, and it is also what makes the work insurable. We do the whole run, so it is done to the standard and we can stand behind it.Source: ACMA registered cabler search

Cat6 handles gigabit over any distance in a house and 10 gigabit over short runs, which is more than any NBN plan sold today. Cat6a costs more, is stiffer to pull, and only matters if you plan to run 10 gigabit between rooms. For most homes we recommend Cat6 and spend the difference on an extra point.

One where every screen lives: the desk, the TV, the console, the study. Plus one per ceiling access point. It is far cheaper to add a point while the roof is open than to come back. We plan it with you on the walkthrough.

Usually, yes. Relocating the NBN box itself depends on the connection type, but in most homes the practical fix is to leave the box where it is and run a cable from it to a cabinet or the room you actually use. We will tell you which applies to your place.

Wired access points, every time we can cable them. A mesh system with cabled nodes is a good middle ground. A wireless-only mesh, and any WiFi extender, repeats a weak signal and halves it. That is why the shed still drops out.

Yes. Data points and access points sit behind your modem or router and do not care who your provider is. If your router is the weak link we will say so, and we can fit a better one or a small switch in the cabinet.

Yes. The best fix is Cat6 in conduit, trenched or run along the eaves, terminated at a point or a small access point in the outbuilding. Where trenching is not possible we can do a point-to-point wireless link, which is very good, though a cable is still better.

Yes. We run Cat6 to each camera and the doorbell and power them from a PoE switch in the cabinet, so they stay online when the WiFi does not. Cameras on the perimeter should always be cabled.

A few points in a single-storey home with roof access is usually done in a visit. Whole-home cabinets, multiple access points and outbuilding runs take longer, and we confirm the timing with the quote so you know exactly what to expect.
