Why we fit DC fans

Six speeds, silent, and it runs backwards in winter

A DC motor sips power, has no hum, and gives you fine control. Play with it.

Speed
Direction

Summer. Blades push air down over you. Moving air feels three or four degrees cooler, so the aircon can sit higher or stay off.

Most DC fans we fit have six speeds and reverse on the remote. An old AC fan has three speeds on a wall dial and hums on the lowest one.

2.7m

A starting point. Blade tips need clear space from walls and light fittings, and fans must sit at least 2.1 m above the floor, which is what decides the mount.

one fan · 52-inch blades · 14.0 m²

Standard mount

The fan's own short rod puts the blades about 2.3 m up, where they move the most air.

What we install

Ceiling fan installation across Brisbane: every fan, every ceiling

Real photos from our own jobs where we have them.

  • Timber-blade DC ceiling fan in a living room

    DC ceiling fans

Quiet, six speeds, reverse, and a fraction of the power of an old AC fan. Timber, white or black blades. Our default for bedrooms and living rooms.

  • Electrician handing a fan remote to a homeowner under a new ceiling fan

    Fan and light combos

One fitting, two jobs. Wired so the light and fan switch separately where the cabling allows, with a remote or wall control.

  • White ceiling fan on a raked timber ceiling

    High and raked ceilings

Extension rods sized to the ceiling so the blades sit down where they move the air. Properly braced to structure.

  • Electrician fitting an outdoor ceiling fan on a Queenslander deck

    Outdoor and deck fans

Outdoor-rated motors and blades for decks, patios and alfresco areas. Coastal-rated where the salt air asks for it.

  • Bathroom 3-in-1 exhaust, heat and light unit

    Bathroom 3-in-1 units

Exhaust, heat lamps and light in one unit, ducted to outside so the steam actually leaves the room.

  • Large-format commercial ceiling fan under a metal roof

    Commercial and large-format

Big-diameter fans for gyms, warehouses and sheds. Moves a room's worth of air on a trickle of power.

Wobbling, noisy or dead?

Most fan problems are a quick repair

  • Usually a repair

    It wobbles

Unbalanced blades or a loose mounting bracket. It gets worse over time.

Rebalance the blades, tighten or replace the bracket

  • Usually a repair

    It hums, clicks or grinds

A hum on low is the capacitor. A grind is the bearings on the way out.

New capacitor is a quick fix. Bearings usually mean a new fan

  • Usually a repair

The light works, the fan does not

Failed capacitor or a dead wall control. The motor is often fine.

Test, replace the capacitor or control, done in one visit

  • Usually a repair

    The remote stopped responding

Receiver in the canopy has failed or lost its pairing.

    Re-pair or replace the receiver

  • A layout fix

    Downlights strobe through the blades

A downlight behind a spinning fan flickers the whole room.

Move the light, move the fan, or a fan with its own light

  • Usually a new fan

Old three-speed dial, want a remote

The wall dial is the old AC controller. Swapping to DC gives you six speeds and a remote.

How a fan job runs

From dial to remote in one visit

  1. Step 01

    Check the ceiling

What is up there now, how the fan will fix to structure, ceiling height, and where the downlights sit so nothing strobes.

  2. Step 02

Pick the fan, fix the price

Size for the room, DC unless there is a reason not to, light or no light, remote or wall control. One written price.

  3. Step 03

    Fan-rated mount, balanced

Hook and bracket rated for the weight and movement of a fan. Blades balanced, canopy tidy, old fitting removed and taken away.

  4. Step 04

Test every speed and hand over

Every speed, reverse, the light and the remote tested, then signed off under our 12-month workmanship guarantee.

What sets the price of a fan job

From$350

for a ceiling fan, supplied and installed, GST included. Fixed written price before any work starts.

Fan quotes swing between sparkies because the job is mostly access and switching. Ours start from $350 a fan, supplied and installed with GST included. Here is what moves it. One fixed written price before we start, and installing several fans at once brings the per-fan price down.

  • Replacing a fan or light in the same spot, or a brand new position that needs a cable run
  • Ceiling height and pitch: standard, low profile, or an extension rod on a raked ceiling
  • A light in the fan, and whether it needs separate switching
  • Fan supplied by us, or one you have already bought

Fan-rated mount, balanced, tested

Every fan hangs off a fan-rated hook fixed to structure, every blade set is balanced, and every speed is tested before we leave. Covered by our 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Common questions

Fan questions, answered straight

Send a photo of the room and the ceiling, and we will tell you what fan fits before anyone comes out.

It depends on the fault. Failed capacitors, faulty wall controls, and loose connections are usually repairable on the spot. If the motor itself has burnt out, replacement is normally the more economical option, and we tell you straight so your money goes on a new fan instead of an old one. Either way you get a fixed quote before any work starts.

Replacing an existing fan or light fitting with a new fan typically takes one to two hours. Installing a fan where there's no existing fitting takes longer because we need to run cabling and install a switch or remote receiver; we'll confirm the timeframe when we quote.

Both work. Supplied and installed, a ceiling fan starts from $350 with GST included. We can supply a quality fan suited to your room size and ceiling height, or install a fan you've already purchased. If you're buying your own, check the box states it's suitable for Australian conditions and give us a call if you're unsure before you buy.

Common causes are unbalanced blades, a loose mounting bracket, or worn motor bearings. Wobble and noise usually get worse over time and can indicate the fan wasn't installed correctly in the first place. We'll diagnose the cause and give you a fixed price to fix it properly.

Yes. Fan and light combos are one of the most common installs we do. We wire the fan and light on separate switching where the cabling allows, so you can run the fan without the light on.

Yes. ABS Electrical operates under Electrical Contractor Licence 1502980 with full public liability insurance. Every fan is installed by a licensed electrician; in Queensland it's illegal (and dangerous) to install a ceiling fan yourself.

Every installation and repair is backed by a minimum 12-month workmanship guarantee. If anything we did develops a fault inside that window, we come back and fix it at no cost to you. Manufacturer warranties on the fan itself sit on top of that.

DC, nearly every time. A DC motor uses around 70% less power than an old AC fan, has no hum on low, gives you six speeds and reverse on the remote, and starts cheaper to run from day one. AC fans still make sense where the budget is tight and the fan runs rarely. We will tell you straight for your rooms.

Roughly: 1200 mm (48 inch) for rooms under 12 m², 1300 mm (52 inch) for 12 to 20 m², 1500 mm (60 inch) for bigger living areas, and two fans for long open-plan rooms. Blade tips need clearance from walls and light fittings. Use the sizer on this page for a starting point and we confirm on the walkthrough.

Yes, with a low-profile fan. Fan blades have to sit at least 2.1 m above the floor, so on a 2.4 m ceiling there is no room for a rod. Hugger-style fans keep the blades tight to the ceiling and still move plenty of air.

Yes. High and pitched ceilings need an extension rod so the blades sit down in the living zone where they move air, and a bracket that lets the fan hang plumb from a sloped surface. We fix to the timber structure every time.

DC fans come with a remote, and most can add a wall-mounted controller if you would rather not lose it. We keep the existing light switch as the isolator, so the fan can always be turned off at the wall. Smart control via an app is available on many models if you want it.

Yes. Run the fan in reverse on low and it pulls air up through the middle and rolls the warm layer off the ceiling back down the walls, with no draught. Rooms feel warmer and the heater cycles less.

The downlight is behind the spinning blades, so the room strobes. It is a layout problem, and the fan itself is fine. The fix is moving the downlight, moving the fan, or fitting a fan with its own light, and we plan for it before we cut anything.
